An interesting question was posed recently when I asked members of our congregation to share their honest questions about faith. Is it an unforgivable sin when you do not honor your father and mother?
There is one sin that the Bible says is unforgivable. And it is not disobeying your parents. Jesus said, "So I tell you, every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven—except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will never be forgiven" (Matthew 12:31). In the context, some were saying that Jesus was empowerd by Satan rather than God. By doing this, they lining up in oposition to Jesus and shutting themselves out of forgiveness.
What the Bible does say about parents is found in the 10 Commandments. "Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you." (Exodus 20:12). This was spoken to the nation of Israel as they left slavery in Egypt. The command and the promise was given to them as a group. Thus a community or nation that wants a long history must be one in which parents are respected and honored.
On this Father's Day weekend, focus on the best qualities of your dad. Express appreciation to him. It will be beneficial to him and to you. If you need some ideas for accomplishing this, join us for worship this Sunday or go to http://fathers.com/
